Keeping Grant’s Spirit Alive –
This week is extra special for our family—Kaylee gave her very first public speech in honor of her brother, Grant. The occasion? The Grant Brace Legacy Award, an annual tradition started by the Alcoa High School wrestling team to carry on the values Grant lived by.
Last year, Coach Gossett reached out to the Brace Family with an idea to keep Grant’s spirit alive within the team he loved so much. The award is given each year to a wrestler who works hard, lifts up their teammates, and leaves the program better than they found it – just like Grant did.
The winner gets a trophy, a framed copy of The Man in the Arena (Grant’s favorite quote), and their name added to a plaque in the wrestling room for future athletes to see.
The 2023-2024 season winner is Charlie Sharpe! As a senior and three-year team member, Charlie set the tone for hard work and good character. Even after his own season ended, he still showed up to practices, helped teammates get ready for big tournaments, and cheered them on from the sidelines. One teammate put it best: “No one cares about Alcoa wrestling and his teammates like Charlie Sharpe. He is the man!”
